The Works

Judul Buku : Theodore Boone – Half The Man, Twice The Lawyer

Penulis : John Grisham

Penerbit : Hodder & Stoughton

Tahun : 2010

Jumlah Halaman : 263 hlm.

Bestselling author John Grisham delivers high intensity legal drama for a new generation of readers

Repeat something enough and folks will start to believe it. p. 64

Enemies one moment, old pals the next. Theo had seen it before. His mother had tried to explain that lawyers are paid to do a job, and to do it properly they had to park their personal feelings at the door. The real professionals, she said, never lose their cool and carry grudges. p. 85

“The Racketeer is guilty of only one thing: keeping us engaged until the very last page.”

USA Today

In the history of the United States, only four active federal judges have been murdered. Judge Raymond Fawcett has just become number five. His body is found in his remote lakeside cabin. There is no sign of forced entry or struggle. Just two dead bodies: Judge Fawcett  and his young secretary. And one large, state – of – the – art, extremely secure safe, opened and emptied.

One man, a former attorney, knows who killed Judge Fawcett, and why. But that man, Malcolm Bannister, is currently residing in the Federal Prison Camp near Frostburg,  Maryland. Though serving time, Malcolm has an ace up his sleeve. He has information the FBI would love to know. Malcolm would love to tell them. But everything has a price – and the man known as the Racketeer wasn’t born yesterday.

“A satisfying, deeply engrossing thriller in which different forms of justice are ultimately served.” – The Washington Post

I wish there was a wall, one ten feet tall, made of solid brick, with coils of glistening razor wire along its top, one that would keep me from gazing at the hills and dreaming of freedom. p.8

There are so many cruel twists in a long prison term. One is the feeling of being slowly forgotten by the world and by those you love and need. p.13

It’s hard to believe he could have missed the story of the murder, but it’s also entirely possible. Just because I read several newspaper a day doesn’t mean everyone does. p.32 Lanjutkan membaca “[Resensi Buku] The Racketeer”

It began when he disappeared. But it didn’t really start until they found him…

Life on the run was life in the past. There was no closure. (p. 116)

It’s a lawyer’s dream. Threaten everything, but walk away with the settlement. (p.169)

“… I’ve been a judge for twelve years, and I’ve seen people stand before me and confess to crimes that they still couldn’t believe they committed. Under the right circumstances, a man can do just about anything.” (p. 295)

“… I know it’s a bitter pill to swallow, but you can’t change the facts…” (p. 340)

“Everybody wants to run, Karl. At some point in life, everybody thinks about walking away. Life’s always better on the beach or in the mountains. Problems can be left behind. It’s inbred in us. We’re the products of immigrants who left miserable conditions and came here in search of a better life. And they kept moving west, packing up and leaving, always looking for the pot of gold…” (p. 353-354)

Sebenernya saya pengin banget tulis rangkuman panjang-panjang. Tapi berhubung minggu ini jadi salah satu minggu supeeer sibuk, saya bakal menuliskan resensi ini sesingkat mungkin. Oke, langsung saja.

[Resensi Buku] The Litigators

Judul Buku : The Litigators
Penulis : John Grisham
Penerbit : Hodder & Stoughton Ltd.
Tahun : 2011
Jumlah Halaman : 436 hlm.

David Zinc has it all: big firm, big salary, life in the fast lane. Until the day he snaps and throws it all away.

Leaving the world of corporate law far behind, he talks himself into a new job with Finley & Figg. A self-styled ’boutique’ firm with only two partners, Oscar Finley and Wally Figg are ambulance-chasing street lawyers who hustle nickle-and-dime cases, dreaming of landing the big win.

For all his Harvard Law Degree and five years with Chicago’s top firm, Zinc has never entered a courtroom, never helped a client who really needed a lawyer, never handled a gun.

All that is about to change.

Oscar firmly believed the image also conveyed the message that he did not work cheap, though he usually did. (p. 55)

Not much of a view, but David liked it anyway. It represented an exciting change in his life, a new challenge. It meant freedom. (p. 82)

Lanjutkan membaca “[Resensi Buku] The Litigators”

Soon Michael was in the secret, a thief, on the run from the very dreams he once valued above everything else.

“No one does it better than Grisham. This latest novel is as unputdownable as ever.”

Mat Coward, Independent

“The Street Lawyer opens with the best scene Grisham has ever put on paper.”

John Sutherland, Sunday Times

“Compelling … Grisham is more adept at getting the reader to turn the page than almost any writer working today.”

John Diamond, Daily Mail

Keren banget tempatnya. Sayang, saya nggak sempat foto dalamnya karena terlalu penuh pengunjung. Akhirnya foto depannya aja deh! Di sini saya nggak sengaja nemu buku The Street Lawyer karya John Grisham.

dokumen pribadi

Sebetulnya, udah tahu John Grisham sejak SMA. Tapi, saya kurang suka ebooks. Akhirnya, cuma kelarin beberapa halaman buku A Time to Kill deh.

Karena kebetulan kemarin ketemu karya John Grisham, harga murah dan dari Shakespeare and Company bookstore Paris, saya pun tanpa ragu membelinya. Apalagi setelah membaca halaman depan.
